more finished zipper...and tucked underneath there is a pocket...

it is accessible when the bag is closed or open.

ooooweeee the holiday season is over and its time for a little custom work and prototypin'.

today i made a little 'proof-of-concept' bag to figure some zipper mechanics, and wow did it ever turn out to be a cute bag...

was thinking more of a briefcase arrangement, but already there seems to be interest on this one...

eastside culture crawl

the eastside culture crawl is my favourite event in the city...

even before i participated my work...i found it to be the funnest way to see so many different 'creators' in the city.

this year fiveleft has moved to a new location...the 'courtyard' of the mergatriod building

all those that visited us in the 1000 parker building, i hope you find us in the new location...it seems to be catching on, as we have had a great turn out so far...almost too much.

five days of shopping madness, hundreds of artists and crafts people, and the largest selection of fiveleft leathergoods to date.

landis #1

my new sewing machine has arrived. it is new to me, but not to the world. it was originally was pattened in 1893. i spent a whole day getting it cleaned and ready to go. it is quite the thing to see in action.

ladybucket went to Argentina

im not one to post testimonials, but this girl is too much fun and she owns the mushedclutch. she sent along an email the other day that i felt worthy of posting.

My ladybucket went to Argentina for a couple of weeks. Even though it was semi-business, it managed to enjoy the vineyards of Cafayette and make some senoritas jealous of its strength and capacity combined so artfully with its delicate lines.

Couple of things:
1. Men LOVE the ladybucket. Even caddish, rough miscreants with little regard or taste for a handbag. Many, many male comments.

2. Sorry, Lincoln, your lady friends led you astray. Everyone LOVES the name ladybucket.

the last bit refers to a debate that has been running about the name 'ladybucket'. if you have any comments on the name 'ladybucket' please let me know leather@fiveleft.ca

my new client/sales person sherie

wow, this was fun,

i hear from favourite gifts that someone bought two fiveleft bags, one for herself and one for a relative...cool...

then i get a phone call (while trying to recover from being away for five weeks) from sherie...

we meet at the studio and and instead of taking home one bag, she walks away with five of the best bags i have on hand, including the first ever prototype of the 'new girl' bag, and a ladybucket (carryall) that i made for myself...

here we are (and the bags) before she heads back home.



thanks sharie for not letting 'awkward-just-coming-of-vacation-guy' (me) get in the way of the bags you wanted and helping the people you were picking bags up for...
im sure this adventure is not over...

john and anna bags

Once in a while i am moved to create little projects that challenge my primal creative skills. They always use very basic materials and i only use two tools to make them, my outdoor knife and my little marlin spike (my two very favorite tools). These projects are very special to me and are never commissioned and not for sale. They just happen...

Here are two that i made last month for John Powell and Anna Maidon (two very fun people I worked with for the opening and closing ceremonies)

Here is the story...David Atkins Etn. (the producers of the opening and closing ceremonies) contracted me to help create leathergoods to be used by the Four Host First Nations during the 2010 opening ceremonies

I worked with First Nations designer John Powell to make the bags that held drum sticks used to welcome the atheletes.

I was honoured to collaborate with some masters for The Squamish Nation and Musqueam Nation's bags...

I was also asked to make a series of bags out of a buffalo hide...I made around 20
(with the help of Dana Smith)

Later they asked me to create a gift for ‘a prominent canadian artist’ (they wouldn’t tell me who)...a guitar strap that would be used during closing ceremonies...it was Neil Young.

the round presentation case was my idea. I though the strap should have a beautiful case for it. the artwork on the top was designed by Jody Broomfield...

mushed clutch

I love this story, it is the ultimate testament to the durability of fiveleft leathergoods.
This is what the clutch looked like when it was assembled in my studio on Breakfast Television.



months later it flew off the roof of my car and was smushed by 32 hours of traffic on the Burrard St. Bridge....then it looked like this.

After I found, it I got it wet and folded it back into shape. I did not need to repair it at all, nothing was broken…just mangled. It was still functional.

It was then purchased for a Christmas gift in 2008, and went to the 2009 Leo awards. And is still in use today.

It will be on display in the granville optical window (corner of granville and robson) for the month of march 2010.

creating a retrospective

i have been rounding up some fiveleft leather goods for a retrospective showcase that will run for the month of february in the granville optical display window at granville and robson (vancouver b.c.).

this brought back many memories, i realized how far fiveleft has come in such a short time.
